A delicious, refreshing mint tea is easy to prepare and ideal after meals. So grab a handful of mint, water and honey - let's make some tea!

Before living in the Netherlands, I expected my Dutch diet to include large amounts of strobotail and cheese. And even if that turned out to be true, there was one Dutch specialty that I didn't expect to fall in love with as deeply as I did. Fresh mint tea!

In the Netherlands, fresh mint tea is featured on almost every restaurant menu as a hot drink after a meal. Its refreshing flavor cleanses your palate and helps soothe your belly after a hearty meal!

The recipe is so simple that I almost didn't post it. But after returning to the States for a few weeks and missing out on my favorite tea, I figured I'd better pick myself up all of a sudden (or 10, thanks to my mom's explosive mint garden).

So if you love mint too - or just want to try a new drink after dinner - you should give this fresh mint tea a try!

Fresh Mint Tea for Healthy Life

Fresh Mint Tea Ingredients

Mint: Fresh mint is a must! Both spearmint and spearmint work well (the difference between mint types is here).

Water: Boil water on the stove or in the kettle.

Honey (optional): For a slightly sweeter tea, serve with a sprinkle of blended honey!

How to Make Fresh Mint Tea

Step 1: Boil the water
Instead of boiling water on the stove, which takes a lot of time and uses a lot of electricity, I'm a big fan of using a hot water boiler for this! Simply bring water to a boil and then pour it into serving glasses.

Step 2: Add Mint

Briefly roll sprigs of mint between your hands to help release the oils, then add 1 or 2 sprigs to each cup. Leave to soak for 3 to 5 minutes.

Step 3: Apply

Add a little honey if desired and stir until dissolved. Optionally garnish with a slice of lemon and lime juice.

Fresh or Dried Mint

Although you can make tea from dried mint leaves, I much prefer fresh mint tea. Fresh mint has a crisp, fresh flavor that trumps the dull, dry leaves.

Additional flavor options

Mint tea can be flavored as you wish! Here are some fun add-ons to try:

Add green tea: Known as Moroccan mint, this tea contains green tea and fresh mint!

Add black tea: Similarly, you can add fresh mint leaves to hot black tea.

Add Lemon: Adding fresh lemon juice just before serving makes this tea brighter and tangier.

Make it Iced: Brew this mint tea as directed, then refrigerate before serving with ice.
